Global Emissions Begin to Decline for the First Time – UN

Simon Stiell Urges Nations Not to Slow Down on Climate Action

Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Simon Stiell, has emphasised that the world cannot afford to ease up on climate action.

He affirmed that the Paris Agreement is delivering tangible results, but called for accelerated progress to safeguard both people and the planet.

Speaking at a press conference during the ongoing climate summit in Belém, Stiell stated that COP30 represents another significant milestone in the global climate journey, one built upon the momentum of the Paris Agreement.

According to him, global emissions are bending downward for the first time, with new national commitments expected to reduce emissions by 12 per cent by 2035.

Despite this progress, Stiell cautioned that global heating continues to wreak havoc across the world. He urged nations to act with greater urgency, describing climate action as:

“the greatest economic opportunity of this century.”

He further underscored that climate justice entails ensuring every country and every individual benefits from clean energy and sustainable development.
